Children just love the authority that comes with role-playing a Garda and watching them take on the roles and responsibilities of the Gardaí and express their own personalities and experiences is a joy. Our authentic Garda Síochána costumes certainly help with that transformation. To make dramatic-play even more immersive our Garda Station pdf’s, available in Irish or English make it easy to set up your own Garda Station at home or in the classroom.

Our large format “I am a….”poster is designed to introduce the vocabulary around the theme of An Garda Síochána where children can discuss the theme of Gardaí. Character Traits flash-cards can be added to the poster to encourage children to think about and identify the behaviours that they expect from a Garda Síochána. The “I use..” flash-cards help to introduce some new vocabulary; common equipment used by Gardaí and the blank cards can be used to scribe the roles and responsibilities that the children consider part of a Garda’s job.

Make your own Garda Station

Our printable Garda Station pack includes lots of resources so that you can easily set up a Garda Station dramatic-play area of your own. In addition to the “I am a…” theme poster there is another large format poster, Welcome to the Garda Station that can be used to designate a specific role-play area as the Garda Station. The pdf includes A4 posters for the walls to designate different areas such as the Garda Interview Room or the Jail Cell. We have included plenty of mark-making and writing opportunities with Garda Incident Forms, and of course, all little Gardaí love handing out tickets so there are plenty of those! The personalisable Garda Name Badges can be filled in and attached to a lanyard so that everyone knows just who is in charge.

Detective Gardaí will love the set of printable Footprints and the Fingerprint cards and everyone can make their own Wanted Posters so that the real criminals can be tracked down.

Gardaí also focus on keeping the roads safe and making sure everyone sticks to the rules of the road. Our Road Safety Signs are a great way to set up a checkpoint and practice road safety as part of dramatic-play even on the days when little Gardaí can’t get outdoors and onto the busy streets.

Props for dramatic-play

We always recommend using real-life and authentic props whenever possible. In the case of the Gardaí, you might not want to go so far as real handcuffs but you can set up an area quite easily with a desk and chair for a workstation, an old computer monitor, a keyboard and some stationary. Folders and a clipboard would be going that bit further and if you can get hold of an old phone all the better. Everything you need in terms of forms, signs and posters are in the pdf pack.
